How Can I Shop for Dashain Clothes on a Budget in Nepal?

Dashain clothes are not really a shopping decision. They are an obligation with a deadline, spread across a whole family, arriving at the same time as the goat, the travel and the gifts. That is why the festive clothing bill hurts in a way that ordinary shopping does not: everyone in the house needs something, and everyone needs it in the same three weeks.

This guide is about spending less on that without turning up to Tika looking like you spent less. The short version is that the money is lost to timing rather than to taste, and timing is the one part you control.

When is Dashain 2026, and when should you actually shop?

Dashain 2026 opens with Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October and runs to Kojagrat Purnima on 25 October. Phulpati falls on 17 October, Maha Ashtami on 18 October, and Vijaya Dashami, the main Tika day, on Wednesday 21 October. In the Nepali calendar that is 25 Ashwin to 8 Kartik 2083.

Why do clothes get so expensive before Dashain?

Because a year of retail happens in a month. An economist quoted by the Kathmandu Post in August 2025 put 40 to 70 percent of Nepal's annual market activity inside the Dashain, Tihar and Chhath season. When a seller's entire year turns on three weeks, the price is set by what people will pay under time pressure, not by what the garment is worth.

The Kathmandu Post reported during Dashain 2022 that traders expected clothes, footwear and electronic accessories to rise 20 to 30 percent over the festival, with shirts, pants, bags and footwear already up Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 apiece before the peak. One shopper quoted in the same report said a family Dashain that usually cost around Rs. 50,000 would not be covered by Rs. 80,000 that year.

That festive markup sits on top of a base that has also been rising. The same paper reported in April 2025 that traders pay a 20 percent customs duty on readymade garments, that about 80 percent of the readymade clothing sold in Kathmandu Valley is imported from China, and that apparel prices had risen 5 to 7 percent in a year with clothes and footwear inflation at 7.01 percent. A pair of jeans went up Rs. 100 to Rs. 150 on its own.

What does a preloved Dashain outfit cost in 2026?

Secondhand clothing in Nepal generally runs Rs. 400 to Rs. 2,500 depending on the garment and where you buy it. Festive pieces sit in the middle of that range, because they are worn a handful of times a year and usually come back in excellent condition.

Put together, a complete outfit lands at Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 3,000: a kurta set at Rs. 1,200, a blouse at Rs. 600, or a shirt and trousers at Rs. 1,400 the pair. Buying the same three pieces new during the festive fortnight comfortably passes Rs. 5,000, and for a family of four that difference is the entire clothing budget rather than a saving on it.

Is it acceptable to wear secondhand clothes for Dashain?

This is the real question behind the budget one, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. The tradition is wearing something new for Tika. A preloved kurta you have never worn is new to you, and families across Kathmandu have always passed good clothes between cousins, siblings and neighbours at exactly this time of year. Buying preloved is the same practice with a shorter supply chain and a clearer price.

Where the preference for brand new is fair, and worth respecting rather than arguing with:

• Clothes given as a gift to elders. A gift is partly the gesture of buying it. Buy those new, and make room in the budget by buying your own outfit preloved.
• Anything worn against the skin. Innerwear and base layers lose their stretch and are not worth buying used, at Dashain or any other time.
• A child's first Dashain outfit, if that matters in your house. It is one item, not a whole wardrobe.

Everything visible, which is to say everything the photographs will actually show, is a good preloved buy. Festive wear in particular: a saree worn twice a year for two years has had less wear than a t-shirt gets in a month.

How do you buy online and be sure it arrives in time?

The risk with festive shopping online is not only money, it is the deadline. An item that never arrives is bad in July and a disaster on 20 October. Three rules cover most of it.

Order a week before Ghatasthapana at the latest. Delivery across Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Kirtipur is quick, but the week before Dashain is the busiest logistics week of the year and it is also when you have the least slack to fix a problem.

Ask for measurements, never trust the label. Chest and shoulder width laid flat for a kurta or shirt, waist laid flat for trousers, blouse measurements for a saree. Sizing on imported secondhand stock is inconsistent, and a festive outfit that does not fit cannot be fixed the night before.
